The focal point in Linlithgow Town Centre is The Cross, in the centre of the High Street. Its main feature is the Cross Well which was erected some time before 1553, but was rebuilt in 1628, damaged by Cromwell's troops in 1650 and was rebuilt again in 1658.
The present well, a replica of the previous one, was constructed in 1807 and was restored to working order in 1989 and unveiled by Queen Elizabeth to commemorate Linlithgow's 600 years as a royal burgh.
